Former Governor of Cross River State, Liyel Imoke, has ended his long membership in the People’s Democratic Party after spending about 28 years in the party.
Imoke made his decision known in a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026.
The letter was addressed to the ward chairman of the party in Itigidi Council Ward, located in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
In the letter, the former governor explained that the crisis within the party had continued for a long time and had made it difficult for him to continue serving both the party and the people in a meaningful way.
Imoke joined the party in 1998 as one of its early members when the PDP was formed.
During his time in the party, he held several public offices at both the national and state levels.
He served the country as a presidential special adviser and later became a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
He also governed Cross River State for two terms after winning the governorship election under the PDP platform.
While announcing his departure, Imoke expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunities it gave him over the years to serve the nation and his state.
He also appreciated the support he received from members and supporters throughout his political career in the party.
After leaving the PDP, he wished the party well in its future activities.
