LP Fixes May 23 For Presidential Primary.

The Labour Party has fixed May 23, 2026, for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was reached during a National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday, with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission present. Details of the meeting were released in a communique on Wednesday.

According to the timetable approved by the party, it will submit its membership register to INEC on April 15, 2026. Primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly are scheduled for May 15, 2026.

The council also backed the steps taken by the party’s leadership under Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwochocha regarding upcoming internal activities. These include ward congresses on March 26, local government congresses on March 28, and state congresses on March 31. The party’s national convention is expected to hold on April 11, 2026.

During the meeting, the council reviewed recent issues within the party, including the reported invasion of its national secretariat by suspected thugs said to be linked to some members.

After examining the report of a disciplinary committee led by Salisu Mohammed, the council approved the suspension of several members over misconduct, anti-party actions and their alleged involvement in the disruption at the party office.

Those affected include Eneyi Zidougha, Hilda Doukubo, Lincolin Charles, Muhammed Sabitu Aliyu, Ogar Osim, Vincent Okwuokei, Casmir Uchenna, Simon Bamga, Abduljamid Suleiman, Emmanuel Agida, Auwala Ahmed, Ularama Jubrila, Grace Posat, Suleiman Abdul, Ajibade Samson, Alexander Ombugu, Elizabeth Ativie, Godwin Jioke, Airen Igbinedion, Osas Frank, Kennedy Ahanotu, Ayidele Olurunfemi, B. Arabanbi, Umar Faruk Ibrahim, Auwal Tafoki and Obiora Ifoh.

The council also approved the ongoing update of the party’s membership register using both digital and manual methods, especially to reach members in rural areas. The move is aimed at improving record keeping and internal processes in line with the Electoral Act 2026.

In addition, the council agreed that vacant positions within the party should be filled through interim appointments to keep activities running smoothly until proper congresses are held.

Members were advised to settle disputes through internal channels to maintain unity and reduce conflicts within the party.
