NBA Faults Judge Over Courtroom Incident.

The Nigerian Bar Association has reacted to reports from the Federal High Court in Abuja where a lawyer was allegedly asked to kneel during proceedings, describing the situation as troubling.

The incident happened on Monday, March 16, 2026, during a court session presided over by Mohammed Umar.

A legal practitioner, Marshall Abubakar, who appeared as lead counsel for activist Omoyele Sowore, was reportedly told to step away from the Bar and kneel after raising his voice while addressing the court over a hearing date.

It was also gathered that the judge warned the lawyer about possible contempt of court during the exchange.

In its reaction, the NBA, through its President Afam Osigwe, said the development raises serious concerns about how courtroom authority is used and how legal practitioners are treated during proceedings.

The association explained that while judges are allowed to control activities in their courtrooms, such powers are guided by law and must not go beyond accepted standards.

It noted that the court is a place where order and respect must be maintained through proper procedures.

On the issue of contempt, the NBA said the power exists but must follow due process to ensure fairness and protect the rights of those involved.

The body also frowned at the reported order asking a lawyer to kneel, stating that such an action is not part of any known legal punishment in Nigeria and does not fit into expected judicial conduct.

It added that respect for the court is not only about final decisions but also about how proceedings are handled from start to finish.

The association further stated that if any individual is believed to have acted in a way that disrespects the court, the proper legal steps must be followed before any punishment is given.

While reacting to the incident, the NBA also reminded lawyers to remain calm, respectful, and professional in court at all times. It said lawyers are expected to defend their clients strongly but must do so within acceptable limits and avoid actions that may disrupt proceedings.

According to the association, the relationship between lawyers and judges is built on mutual respect and plays a key role in ensuring justice is properly delivered.

The NBA called on all parties involved to remain calm and advised that any complaints from the incident should be handled through the right legal and disciplinary channels.

It added that it may take further action if necessary to ensure that proper standards and legal ethics are maintained across the system.
