Nigerians Can Film Police On Duty, Court Rules.

The Federal High Court in Warri, Delta State, has affirmed that Nigerians are allowed to record police officers performing their duties in public.

In a ruling delivered on Tuesday in case number FHC/WR/CS/87/2025, Justice H. A. Nganjiwa ordered that police officers must wear clear name tags and display their force numbers at all times.

The court also stated that officers cannot harass, intimidate, arrest, or seize devices from people recording their actions.

The court awarded Maxwell Uwaifo, the applicant in the case, N5 million for the violation of his fundamental rights and an additional N2 million to cover legal costs.

By granting these requests, the court reinforced the right of citizens to document police activities in public spaces without fear of retaliation.

The ruling marks a step toward greater accountability and protection of civil rights in Nigeria, ensuring that citizens can exercise their constitutional freedoms while holding public officers responsible for their actions.
