Nigerian businessman Obi Cubana has apologized to the Igbo people after his remarks at a political event in Enugu drew criticism.
The comments were made during the launch of his “City Boy Movement” in support of President Bola Tinubu.
Cubana said that Ndi Igbo “lack knowledge.”
Many viewed this statement as offensive, given the Igbo community’s reputation for education and entrepreneurship.
The backlash was strong on social media, with critics saying the statement was demeaning and harmful to his own community.
In response, Obi Cubana appeared on BBC Igbo and expressed regret over the misunderstanding.
He explained that his words were meant to encourage political involvement among Igbo people, not to question their intelligence or abilities.
He said, “I did not mean to insult Ndi Igbo. My words were meant to encourage greater political awareness and participation among our people. The message was about the need for stronger political engagement not about intelligence or capability.”
