Disarm Artificial Intelligence Before It Controls Humanity — Pope Leo XIV Warns World Leaders.

Pope Leo XIV has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) must be “disarmed” before it grows powerful enough to dominate humanity, raising fresh concerns about the rapid expansion of advanced technology.

In a new encyclical letter titled Magnifica Humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence, released on Monday, the pontiff urged global leaders and technology developers to ensure AI remains a tool that serves humanity rather than one that controls it.

According to the pope, AI should be freed from what he described as a dangerous mentality of competition, power struggles and unchecked technological expansion.

“Finally, I would like to employ the expression ‘to disarm,’ which is close to my heart. Disarming AI means freeing it from the mentality of ‘armed’ competition, which today is not limited simply to the military context, but is also an economic and cognitive phenomenon,” the letter stated.

Pope Leo XIV warned that the global race to create increasingly advanced AI systems could place technology above human dignity and weaken society’s ability to make ethical decisions.

“Disarming AI means freeing it from the mentality of ‘armed’ competition,” he reiterated.

The pontiff explained that his concerns go beyond military applications of AI, stressing that economic rivalry, technological monopolies and the concentration of power among a few dominant actors also pose major threats.

He further cautioned against attempts to use technology to completely eliminate human limitations, insisting that human vulnerability should not be treated as a defect.

The pope also expressed concern over AI’s growing role in warfare, surveillance, misinformation and labour markets, calling for stronger ethical safeguards and international oversight.
