EFCC Moves Ex-Power Minister, Saleh Mamman, To Kuje Prison After 75-Year Jail Sentence.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has transferred former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja to begin serving his 75-year prison sentence for money laundering.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Maitama gave the order after the anti-graft agency presented Mamman before the court on Tuesday. The EFCC disclosed the development in a statement shared on its official X account.

Mamman was earlier convicted on May 7 on all 16 amended counts bordering on the laundering of over ₦33.8 billion. He was subsequently sentenced in absentia on May 13 to a combined 75 years imprisonment.

The case involved the alleged diversion of funds and illegal acquisition of expensive properties linked to major power projects, including the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric schemes.

According to the EFCC, the former minister fled Abuja for Kaduna after his conviction but was later arrested on May 19 in the Rigasa area of Kaduna alongside a relative.

During the court proceedings, Mamman’s relative, Shamsudeen Mohammed, told the court that the former minister travelled from Abuja to Kaduna by taxi because he was ill and receiving traditional treatment.

Justice Omotosho informed the ex-minister that his prison sentence officially began immediately after the hearing. The judge noted that Mamman left Abuja alone after judgment had already been delivered.

Mamman, however, claimed he stayed away from court proceedings due to health challenges.

The EFCC also asked the court to approve the forfeiture of five additional properties allegedly linked to the former minister. The properties are located in Abuja and Kaduna, including apartments, mansions, and a plaza in Wuse 2.

The court adjourned hearing on the forfeiture application until June 8, 2026, to allow Mamman respond to the application.
