A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), identified as Ajetunmobi Sunday Dayo, has reportedly dr@wned at a beach in Bayelsa State during a picnic outing with colleagues.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday at Okumbiribeleu Beach in Akassa community, Brass Local Government Area, where the corps member and others had gone for a tourist visit.
According to community sources, Dayo was swimming alongside fellow corps members when he suddenly went missing. His colleagues reportedly became alarmed after noticing his absence and immediately began searching for him.
Local divers at the beach were later mobilised for a rescue operation after an alarm was raised, but efforts to find him alive proved unsuccessful.
His body was eventually discovered on Monday after the water washed his remains ashore.
It was gathered that the late corps member was serving at Community Secondary School (CSS), Kongho, in Akassa before the unfortunate incident. The group was said to have travelled from their lodge in Tobukiri to the beach when the tragedy happened.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the NYSC in Bayelsa State, Mrs Yvonne Halliday-Urie, described the development as heartbreaking.
“The information is true and sad. He was buried yesterday in Yenagoa. NYSC performed his burial rites according to the parents’ request,” she said.
The spokesperson of the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, also confirmed the incident, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the dr@wning.
