The Borno State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of Inspector Abdulkadir Garba, widely known as “Buratai,” who was struck by lightning while on duty in Maiduguri.
According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, the incident occurred on Wednesday, May 7, 2026, at about 2:19 p.m.
Inspector Garba was carrying out his routine duty of coordinating vehicle parking opposite the police headquarters alongside his senior colleague, ASP Wazani Adamu.
As storm clouds gathered, both officers attempted to seek shelter. However, before they could reach safety, a sudden thunderclap was followed by a powerful lightning str+ke that h+t them.
While ASP Adamu survived in what officials described as a miraculous escape, Inspector Garba, who bore the full impact, d+ed from inj¥ries, including partial b¥rns.
Describing the incident as deeply heartbreaking, Daso noted that the fallen officer was respected for his dedication, commitment, and passion for duty.
