Former presidential candidate and media entrepreneur, Chief Dele Momodu, has disclosed that Peter Obi turned down suggestions to form a political alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election. According to Momodu, Obi believed he was more popular than Atiku and therefore did not see the need to collaborate.
Momodu shared the revelation during an interview on the *Naija Unfiltered* podcast, recounting conversations with the former Anambra State governor regarding the possibility of joining forces with Atiku.
“I told Peter, why don’t you go and work with Atiku? Atiku was the person who brought him to national prominence,” Momodu said, noting that he presented several historical examples of political figures who leveraged vice-presidential or deputy positions to eventually attain the presidency.
He cited former Ghanaian President John Mahama, who rose from vice president to head of state, Nigeria’s Goodluck Jonathan, and even U.S. President Joe Biden, who served as vice president under Barack Obama before winning the presidency.
“When Atiku picked Peter, the governors were angry, but one thing about Atiku is that once he makes up his mind, he is a very focused man,” Momodu recalled.
Despite these arguments, Momodu said Obi remained unconvinced. “You’ve always been a governor of a state, but Peter told me he’s more popular than Atiku,” he stated.
