Former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi has said he sees himself as one of the simplest politicians in Nigeria, adding that he lives a normal lifestyle compared to what many people expect from public office holders.
He made the remarks during a podcast hosted by , where he discussed corruption, privilege, and the realities of holding political office.
Amaechi explained that when he says he will not steal public funds, he is serious most of the time, noting that his words are often misunderstood by the public.
He also said that governance can be complex, arguing that people in public office sometimes gain indirect benefits simply from the influence and access that come with their positions, even without directly taking government money.
According to him, political office can open doors to opportunities such as access to loans and financial support that may not be available to ordinary citizens without similar status.
He further recalled being advised while in office to take a percentage from a large government transaction, saying he was told that a 10 percent cut from a multi-trillion-naira deal would amount to huge personal wealth, though he did not indicate that he acted on such advice.
Amaechi also said that political leaders have contributed to the hardship in the country, adding that Nigerians are often shaped to think in ways influenced by political actions and decisions.
