Troops of the Nigerian Army have rescued 23 passengers who were kidnapped by armed men along the Ayegunle–Bunu Road in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State after a violent attack on commuters.
Security reports say the incident happened around 3:30 a.m. on Monday when the armed attackers blocked the highway and opened fire on vehicles passing through the route. Several passengers were taken away during the attack as panic spread among road users.
Soldiers from the 12 Brigade in Kabba were later deployed after a distress call was received. They moved to the area in response, but the attackers had already escaped by the time the troops arrived. This account was shared by a military analyst, Deji Adesogan.
During the search operation that followed, the troops recovered two bodies and also found five injured victims at the scene. Abandoned vehicles were also discovered, including two Toyota buses and a HOWO truck, which were left behind during the incident.
The military later intensified tracking efforts along suspected escape routes. As troops closed in, the kidnappers reportedly abandoned 23 of the victims, who were then safely rescued by the soldiers and moved out of the area.
The injured passengers were taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Kabba for medical attention while security operations continued in surrounding communities to locate the fleeing suspects.
Authorities also confirmed that patrols and clearance operations have been increased across the area to prevent further attacks and improve safety for travelers using the highway.
