Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly condemned the recent abduction of family members of Chief Adebayo Adelabu, former Minister of Power, calling the incident a stark reflection of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.
Reports indicate that Adelabu’s sister and twin nephews were kidnapped in Ibadan, Oyo State, prompting Atiku to express solidarity with the family and urge urgent action to tackle the nation’s escalating insecurity.
In a statement released on Wednesday, June 3, by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described the abduction as particularly alarming because it occurred in broad daylight at Challenge Bus Stop, one of Ibadan’s busiest locations. He emphasized that the kidnappers’ ability to operate in such a prominent public space without interception underscores the deteriorating security situation across the country.
Atiku stressed that the incident should serve as a wake-up call for government officials. “If government officials have become desensitized to the suffering of ordinary citizens, should they not at least be alarmed when insecurity reaches the doorstep of one of their own?” he said, lamenting the growing wave of kidnappings and violent crimes nationwide.
“Schoolchildren are abducted from classrooms, farmers are driven from their lands, travelers are kidnapped on highways, and entire communities are held hostage by fear. Yet, despite these grim realities, the government’s response has too often been characterized by excuses, propaganda, and palliatives rather than decisive action,” he added.
The former vice president noted that kidnappers do not discriminate by social status or political affiliation, pointing out that the same insecurity affecting ordinary Nigerians is now reaching those in government.
Atiku called for a more effective, intelligence-driven security strategy to dismantle kidnapping networks, protect vulnerable communities, and restore public confidence. He urged the administration of President Bola Tinubu to take immediate steps to secure lives and property, ensure the rescue of the victims, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Concluding his statement, Atiku extended his prayers and support to the Adelabu family and other Nigerians impacted by insecurity, describing the current situation as unacceptable and calling for urgent reforms to safeguard citizens.
