CAN Declares June 14 ‘Black Sunday,’ Calls For State Of Emergency On Insecurity.

News PlatformNG reports that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, as a “Black Sunday” in honour of victims of terrorist attacks across the country, amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

The association also announced a nationwide prayer programme scheduled to hold from June 12 to June 14, aimed at seeking divine intervention in addressing the persistent wave of violence and insecurity affecting many parts of the country.

The announcement was made at the conclusion of the National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026, where CAN President, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel Okoh, expressed deep concern over the increasing threat posed by terrorism, kidnapping, and other forms of violent crime.

While emphasizing the importance of prayer, Archbishop Okoh stated that spiritual efforts alone would not be enough to resolve the nation’s security challenges. He called on the Federal Government to take decisive action by declaring a state of emergency on insecurity, describing the move as necessary to restore peace and stability.

The CAN President also advocated for the swift implementation of state policing reforms and the decentralisation of security structures across the country. According to him, empowering local security frameworks would enable faster and more effective responses to emerging threats.

In addition, Archbishop Okoh demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped victims and insisted that perpetrators of abductions and terrorist attacks must be brought to justice. He urged government authorities and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect citizens and prevent further loss of lives.

The declaration of a “Black Sunday” and the planned national prayer programme reflect growing concerns among religious leaders over the state of insecurity and the urgent need for comprehensive measures to safeguard lives and property across Nigeria.
