Court Grants Sowore Fresh N200m Bail.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, a fresh bail set at N200 million after earlier revoking his bail for failing to attend trial.

The court, presided over by Justice Muhammad Umar, ruled that Sowore must meet strict conditions before he can be released.

He is required to provide two sureties, one of whom must be a traditional ruler from his community, while the second must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory.

The judge also ordered that his international passport be submitted to the court registrar until the case is concluded.

Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services over allegations linked to cybercrime.

The case stems from social media posts in which he allegedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as a criminal. He has denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.

The court had earlier revoked his bail on June 16 after he failed to appear in court, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest. He was later remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre before filing a fresh bail application.

Delivering Tuesday’s ruling, Justice Umar restored bail under the new conditions and adjourned the matter until July 6 for continuation of trial, when Sowore is expected to open his defence.

Reacting after the ruling, Sowore said the decision would not slow down his political movement, insisting that his legal challenges would not deter his activism or his push for what he described as national liberation.
