Nollywood actor Deyemi Okanlawon has criticized the growing trend of mocking celebrities on social media, saying many people are quick to judge public figures without understanding the challenges they face.
The actor expressed concern over the way some Nigerians speak about celebrities online, noting that those in the public eye often deal with pressures and struggles that are not visible to the public.
Deyemi particularly took issue with the use of the term “yeyebrities,” a word sometimes used to belittle celebrities. According to him, such labels are unfair and reflect a tendency to downplay the achievements of others.
He said many critics make assumptions about celebrities without knowing the realities of their lives, adding that the constant ridicule directed at public figures is unfortunate.
The actor also warned people to be mindful of the words they use against others, arguing that disrespecting someone’s success could affect their own ability to achieve similar heights.
He maintained that people should avoid diminishing the accomplishments of others.
Deyemi further advised critics not to assume that fame or public recognition will never come to members of their own families.
He said anyone who encourages negative comments against celebrities today could one day find a relative facing the same treatment.
He concluded by urging Nigerians to show more understanding and compassion toward celebrities, reminding the public that famous individuals also experience personal struggles and challenges behind the scenes, just like everyone else.
