The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major review of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.
As part of the sweeping reforms, the council directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth to amend the NYSC Act and its operational regulations to reflect the approved changes and facilitate the immediate implementation of the new framework.
One of the most significant changes introduced is that the operational leadership of the NYSC will now be headed by a civilian, ending decades of military-led administration of the scheme. However, the military will continue to play a key role in providing security for corps members across the country.
According to the Federal Government, the reforms are designed to reposition the NYSC as a skills-driven, productivity-focused, and youth empowerment institution capable of contributing more effectively to national development.
The government said the new framework aligns with the administration's broader economic agenda of building a $1 trillion Nigerian economy by equipping young Nigerians with practical skills, promoting entrepreneurship, and enhancing workforce productivity.
The planned amendments to the NYSC Act are expected to provide the legal backing required for the implementation of the reforms once they are passed into law.
Established in 1973 to promote national unity and integration after the Nigerian Civil War, the NYSC has remained one of the country's most enduring youth development programmes. The latest reforms represent the most significant restructuring of the scheme in more than five decades.
