Ten years after the passing of former Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi, his name will be added to the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame in Lagos.
The recognition is for his service to Nigerian football and his role in using sports to support Nigeria’s image abroad. The plan was made known during a memorial lecture held in Lagos, where former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami spoke about the development.
The Sports Diplomacy Wall of Fame is a national project set up by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs. It is used to honour Nigerians who have contributed to the country’s global relations through sports.
Keshi will be officially added to the list at a ceremony scheduled for July 28. The date is one day before the tenth anniversary of his burial.
The event will also mark three years since the monument was placed at the institute’s premises in Lagos. It was supported by businessman Dr Allen Onyema and Air Peace.
Keshi’s record in football includes playing and captaining the national team, winning the Africa Cup of Nations as a player in 1994, and later leading the Super Eagles to another title in 2013 as coach. He also guided Togo to its first World Cup appearance in 2006.
He was known for his strong role in developing players and helping many Nigerian and African footballers move into professional football in Europe.
Keshi died on June 7, 2016, in Benin City at the age of 54. He was later buried in his hometown in Illah, Delta State.
During his career, he was named CAF Coach of the Year twice, in 2005 and 2013, for his achievements with national teams.
