A fire incident on Wednesday afternoon caused panic within the Senate wing of the National Assembly complex in Abuja, prompting swift action from lawmakers and staff to contain the situation.
Videos circulating on social media showed thick smoke filling parts of the affected area as officials and workers scrambled to respond to the emergency.
In one of the clips, voices could be heard speculating about the cause of the fire, with one person saying, “The fire came from gas,” while another lamented the apparent absence of a fire extinguisher.
Another video captured Senator Ned Nwoko leaving the affected section of the complex amid the commotion.
According to reports by TVC, the incident occurred shortly after the Senate Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa, the North-East nominee for the commission’s board.
Eyewitnesses reportedly said the fire originated from the kitchen section of the hearing room and may have been triggered by a microwave left switched on.
The report further stated that Senators Asuquo Ekpenyong and Salihu Mustapha were among those who immediately stepped in to help contain the fire. Alongside other individuals at the scene, they reportedly used available resources, including water and detergents, to prevent the flames from spreading before emergency responders arrived.
The fire was eventually brought under control, and no casualties were reported as of the time of filing this report. Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident.
