News PlatformNG reports that the House of Representatives has announced plans to vote on a constitutional amendment that would allow for the creation of state and local police forces as part of Nigeria’s efforts to tackle rising insecurity.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitution Review, told reporters after plenary that lawmakers have decided to prioritise the state police issue over other pending bills.
He further stated that all members currently away on oversight duties have been instructed to suspend their activities and return to Abuja on Thursday, June 11, for the voting procedure.
The bill, which aims to decentralise policing powers to state and local governments, is sponsored by Deputy Speaker Kalu alongside 14 other members of the House.
