Disturbing new details have emerged in the investigation into the deaths of two women and four children found inside a residential apartment in Mechanicville, where authorities say evidence suggests a suspected poisoning and possible additional violent injuries.
Police confirmed that a handwritten note was recovered at the scene, alongside preliminary autopsy findings indicating that a combination of prescription and over-the-counter medications may have been used in what investigators believe was a deliberate poisoning. Officials also reported evidence of an unidentified weapon that caused “sharp force injuries” to at least one of the victims.
Authorities were called to the apartment on Tuesday evening, where they discovered the bodies of 64-year-old Amy Steadman, her 44-year-old daughter Sarah Myers, and Myers’ four children: 13-year-old Harper, 11-year-old Hudson, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn.
Mechanicville Police Chief Bill Rabbit said the handwritten note found at the scene appears to implicate Steadman in the deaths. He also noted that the victims were not formally identified until after autopsies were completed on Wednesday, following concerns from neighbors who had not seen the family for an extended period.
One resident told police they noticed a strong odor coming from the apartment, describing it as “the smell of death,” along with flies gathering around windows and an air conditioning unit. Investigators estimate the victims may have been deceased for as long as 13 days, though the exact time of death has not yet been determined.
Preliminary toxicology results suggest multiple substances were involved in what authorities are treating as intentional poisoning. Officials also confirmed that at least one child suffered fatal sharp force injuries, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
“Evidence recovered during the investigation, including a handwritten note and other circumstantial material, strongly suggests that Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths,” Chief Rabbit said during a press briefing. “However, final determinations regarding accountability will only be made after all investigative findings, toxicology results, and medical examiner reviews have been completed.”
The children’s father, who had been involved in a custody dispute with Sarah Myers, said he was scheduled to pick up the children and bring them back to Utah on June 30, just days after their bodies were discovered.
“No parent wants to outlive their children,” he said. “It breaks my heart.”
