Former senator and daughter of former President Iyabo Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as continuous unfair treatment and lack of recognition within the party's structure in Ogun State.
In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, Obasanjo formally announced her decision to leave the ruling party after expressing dissatisfaction with recent developments surrounding the party’s governorship candidate selection process.
Obasanjo, who had sought the APC governorship ticket in Ogun State, questioned the process that produced Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the party’s consensus candidate. According to her, the process did not follow the party’s laid-down procedures.
She stated that although she had earlier agreed to support whoever emerged through a consensus arrangement, she was not consulted or involved before Adeola was presented as the preferred candidate. She also claimed that some of her supporters were prevented from entering the venue where the candidate was unveiled and were allegedly intimidated during the exercise.
Despite her concerns, Obasanjo said she accepted the outcome in the interest of maintaining unity within the party and publicly congratulated Adeola after his emergence.
The former lawmaker explained that following the primary process, Adeola reached out and requested a meeting with her supporters. During the meeting, three requests were presented to him on behalf of her camp. She said he promised to provide a response within one week.
However, Obasanjo noted that more than two months had passed without any response. She said the silence reinforced what she viewed as a long-standing pattern of neglect and disregard for her role and contributions within the party.
According to her, the treatment she received after the governorship selection process convinced her that she was no longer valued within the APC. She therefore decided to end her membership and move on from the party.
While announcing her departure, Obasanjo expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Ogun APC leadership led by Chief Sanusi, and party leaders in Ogun Central for the support and courtesies extended to her during her time in the APC.
Her resignation comes at a time when political activities ahead of future elections are gradually gathering momentum in Ogun State, with parties and aspirants positioning themselves for upcoming contests.
