Man Dies In NDLEA Custody In Enugu.

A 45-year-old man, Ifeanyi Ugwu, has died while in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Enugu State after what has been described as a case involving alleged torture and prolonged detention without trial.

Reports say Ugwu was arrested on April 20, 2026, in Ogbute community during a market operation and was accused of being in possession of 1kg of cannabis. He was then taken into custody and allegedly held for several months.

His family claims his health worsened while in detention after he was subjected to severe physical assault, leading to serious internal complications. They further alleged that he began to vomit blood and was moved between medical facilities before he eventually died.

Relatives also said they were not informed of his condition or death until much later, adding that they only got confirmation after making enquiries at a military facility in Enugu. The family further accused officials of giving conflicting accounts about the cause of death, including claims of illness, while insisting that injuries observed on his body suggested physical abuse.

They also alleged that efforts to carry out an autopsy on the body have been resisted, making it difficult to independently determine the cause of death.

The family is now demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest, detention, and death.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Enugu has not issued an official response to the allegations, and attempts to reach the state commander, Owoputi Adekunle, have not been successful at the time of reporting.
