Senator Ali Ndume has called for a stronger United States military presence in Borno State, urging American forces to establish a base in the Mandara Mountains to help tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.
Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District in the Senate, made the appeal during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday.
According to the lawmaker, the Mandara Mountains would provide a strategic location for monitoring and disrupting the activities of insurgents operating in the region. He said a U.S. military base in the area could help in tracking and driving out Boko Haram fighters from their strongholds, including the Sambisa Forest.
The senator explained that the location would also enable surveillance of key areas used by insurgents for movement and coordination. He noted that advanced technology available to the United States could improve intelligence gathering and support ongoing efforts to restore security in the state.
Ndume further stated that the Mandara Mountains could serve as a critical point for cutting off routes allegedly used by insurgents to move across different parts of Borno State. He said limiting access to these routes would reduce the ability of the fighters to receive supplies and support.
The lawmaker outlined a network of locations linking Sambisa Forest, Lake Chad, Kaga, Buni Yadi and Gwoza, arguing that breaking the cycle of movement through these areas would weaken insurgent operations.
He also stressed that defeating terrorism requires adequate manpower and resources, adding that the Nigerian Army needs more support and equipment to sustain security operations on the ground.
