Oshiomhole Backs Death Penalty For Kidnappers, Bandits In Edo.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who represents Edo North Senatorial District, has expressed support for the proposed death penalty for kidnappers and bandits put forward by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo.

Oshiomhole made the declaration while addressing supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, the former Edo State governor commended the Okpebholo administration for what he described as efforts to restore peace and security across the state.

Speaking at the event, Oshiomhole said he fully supports the governor's proposal, arguing that states within Nigeria's federal system have the authority to enact laws prescribing penalties for offences under their jurisdiction.

"I stand here to completely endorse the declaration by the Governor of Edo State that we are in a federation where every state has the right to enact laws on punishment when it comes to state offences. So kidnappers and bandits will be punished by death through firing squad," the senator said.

The endorsement comes amid growing concerns over rising cases of kidnapping and banditry in parts of Edo State and across the country, with state governments exploring stricter measures to curb violent crimes.

Governor Okpebholo's proposal has generated public debate, with supporters arguing that tougher penalties could deter criminal activities, while critics are expected to raise legal and human rights concerns over the implementation of capital punishment.
