Oyo Police Arrest Two Over Fake Bandit Attack Rumor In Ido LGA.

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two individuals in connection with the circulation of false information claiming that bandits attacked Lamini Community in Ido Local Government Area and killed six residents.

The misinformation spread widely via WhatsApp and other social media platforms, generating fear, panic, and tension among residents.

Upon receiving the report, the police immediately deployed patrol and tactical teams to Lamini Community to verify the claims, reassure residents, and calm the situation. Investigations confirmed that no attack occurred and that no lives were lost.

Following verification, the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, directed the State Intelligence Department (SID) to trace the origin of the false information. The investigation, supported by forensic analysis, led to the arrest of Pastor Amos Joel Muyiwa, who admitted to creating and circulating the voice note without confirming its authenticity.

Further inquiry revealed that the misinformation initially originated from Mulikat Bashiru within the community. She was subsequently identified, traced, and arrested in connection with the incident.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, stated that both suspects are cooperating with authorities as investigations continue to determine if others were involved.

“The deliberate spread of false information, fake news, and disinformation is a serious threat to public order and security,” DSP Olayinka said. “Such actions create panic, undermine public confidence, and divert critical security resources from genuine emergencies.”

The Oyo State Police Command urged residents to exercise caution and verify information through official channels before sharing it on social media. Individuals found deliberately spreading false information capable of causing public disorder will face prosecution under existing laws.

So they can track false rumour peddlers but can not track bandits that kidnapped the Oyo school children and teachers
