The feud between Stephen A. Smith and Donald Trump just escalated from insults to an open debate challenge.
The ESPN and SiriusXM personality called out the former president during an appearance on _Laura Coates Live_ on CNN, after Trump questioned Smith’s intelligence in a recent media exchange.
The back-and-forth started after Trump attended Game 3 of the NBA Finals, where he was booed loudly by fans during the national anthem. The New York Knicks went on to lose 115-111 to the San Antonio Spurs, snapping a 13-game winning streak. Critics online jokingly blamed Trump’s presence for the loss.
Smith was one of the most vocal critics of Trump’s appearance. In response, Trump reportedly dismissed Smith’s commentary by attacking his IQ and suggesting he wasn’t smart enough to challenge him politically.
Host Laura Coates asked Smith about Trump’s repeated IQ jabs. Smith said it’s Trump’s go-to move when he doesn’t have a real comeback.
“He questioned it about everybody, from Maxine Waters to Hakeem Jeffries to the Megyn Kellys of the world, the Tucker Carlsons of the world. It isn’t just Black folks, it’s white folks, too. I get it. I understand it. It’s his default position when he really has no comeback,” Smith said.
Then he issued the challenge directly.
“If he really, really wants to get down to the nitty gritty and really want to challenge me about my I.Q., I welcome a sit down with him, I welcome him on the debate stage,” Smith said.
He didn’t stop there, daring Trump to set it up while he keeps his broadcasting jobs.
“I will be happy to show up against President Trump. Since you think that my I.Q. is questionable, you want to find out? Want some? Come get some! I’ll show up,” Smith declared.
Coates jumped in, joking that she’d be the only suitable moderator for that debate. Smith’s response: “Here we go.”
This is the latest round in an ongoing public feud between the outspoken sports analyst and the former president. Trump has a history of using IQ insults against critics across politics and media. Smith, known for his no-holds-barred takes on _First Take_, clearly isn’t backing down.
No word yet from Trump’s camp on whether he’ll accept the debate invite, as at press time.
