A presidential aide, Dada Olusegun, has pushed back against claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is avoiding responsibility for the abduction of students and teachers in Oyo State or attempting to shift blame to Governor Seyi Makinde.
The debate emerged on social media after an X user resurfaced an old post made by Tinubu during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In the post, Tinubu had argued that the responsibility for governance and national security ultimately rests with the president. The user referenced the kidnapping of schoolgirls during the Jonathan administration and accused the current government of holding Governor Makinde accountable for the recent abduction in Oyo State while applying a different standard.
Reacting to the criticism, Olusegun defended the Tinubu administration, insisting that the federal government has acknowledged the incident and taken responsibility for addressing it.
According to the presidential aide, the situation differs from the handling of past security crises under previous administrations.
“Unlike former President Goodluck Jonathan, my boss has taken full responsibility for the incident and has never denied it happened,” Olusegun stated in response to the social media user.
The exchange has sparked discussion online about the role of federal and state governments in responding to security challenges, particularly incidents involving kidnappings and attacks on schools.
Critics have argued that the federal government should be held accountable for national security matters, while supporters of the administration maintain that security issues often require collaboration between federal, state, and local authorities.
The latest debate highlights the continued public scrutiny of government responses to security incidents and the broader conversation about accountability in addressing insecurity across the country.
