SDP Presidential Candidate Rejects Six-Year Single Term Proposal For Presidents, Governors.

The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, , has dismissed calls for a single six-year tenure for presidents and state governors, describing the proposal as a distraction from Nigeria’s core governance problems.

Adebayo made his position known during an interview on , where he reacted to a planned bill by Senate Leader seeking to amend the constitution to introduce a single term for elected executives.

Supporters of the idea argue that a one-term structure would reduce political pressure and allow leaders to concentrate fully on governance without focusing on re-election campaigns. However, Adebayo argued that such debate misses the real challenge facing the country.

He maintained that Nigeria’s major issue is not the length of tenure but the credibility of its electoral process. According to him, the country needs a system where voters genuinely determine election outcomes without interference or manipulation.

He stressed that attention should be on strengthening institutions and ensuring that elections reflect the will of the people, rather than focusing on constitutional changes around tenure.

Adebayo also said that the current four-year term system remains sufficient if elections are free, fair, and credible, adding that leaders should be assessed based on performance rather than time spent in office.

He further urged political parties to focus on ideas and policies instead of personal attacks, noting that democratic progress depends on issue-based politics and stronger electoral trust.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, , was also mentioned in the broader debate as stakeholders continue discussions around electoral reforms and governance structure.
