Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has called for the establishment of a United States military base in Borno State, arguing that such a presence could strengthen efforts against Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.
Ndume made the appeal during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region. He emphasized the strategic significance of the Mandara Mountains as a vantage point for monitoring insurgent movements, particularly around areas such as the Sambisa Forest.
“I am in full support. In fact, I am appealing. Let the Americans go to Gwoza and take over the Mandara Mountains, please. It will go a long way to cut down on insecurity,” Ndume stated during the interview.
The senator stressed that enhanced surveillance and coordinated military operations in the region could disrupt supply routes and movement channels used by insurgent groups. He also noted that the Nigerian military requires additional resources and manpower to effectively address security threats in the North-East.
“You can’t do that without a team and enough boots on the ground. The Nigerian Army needs the resources,” he added.
Ndume further highlighted that strengthening security operations around the Mandara Mountains, the Sambisa Forest, and surrounding areas could significantly reduce insurgent activity and improve safety for local communities.
