Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central in the Senate, has defended the right of lawmakers to receive official vehicles, saying they are needed for their legislative work.
He spoke during an interview on AIT’s Political Platform, where he reacted to criticism of benefits given to members of the National Assembly.
He said it is unfair to expect senators to move around without official transport while people in the executive arm of government use multiple vehicles for official duties.
Umeh maintained that each senator is entitled to one official vehicle and argued that such support helps them carry out their responsibilities effectively.
He also responded to concerns raised by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project over a court ruling that stopped planned spending on vehicles and allowances for lawmakers. He said enforcement of the judgment is the responsibility of the group.
The senator further dismissed claims that lawmakers receive excessive pay, stating that National Assembly finances are open to audit and can be verified through official processes.
The controversy follows a ruling by the Federal High Court in Lagos, which nullified a proposed N40 billion vehicle purchase and N70 billion in allowances for lawmakers, saying the plan was not in line with procurement rules and public accountability.
The debate continues around spending at the National Assembly, with growing public concern over the cost of governance.
