A fresh bandit attack along the Anka–Maru Road in Zamfara State has left a teacher and a secondary school student dead despite efforts by the teacher’s family to secure his freedom through a ransom payment.
The victims were identified as Mallam Mustapha Maru, a Civic Education teacher at Federal Government College, Anka, and Summayah Abubakar, a newly admitted SS1 student.
The incident occurred while they were travelling from Maru Village to Anka. Armed bandits reportedly ambushed their vehicle and opened fire on passengers.
During the attack, Summayah sustained a gunshot wound to the head, while the driver suffered multiple gunshot injuries.
The injured student was first taken to General Hospital, Anka, before being transferred to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto. However, she later died from her injuries.
Mallam Maru was among several passengers abducted by the attackers and taken into the bush. The kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million and motorcycles for his release.
After negotiations that lasted several days, the demand was reportedly reduced to ₦3 million.
Family members and associates were said to have struggled to raise the money and eventually gathered about ₦3.1 million through various contributions and negotiations conducted by intermediaries.
Despite the payment, the teacher did not regain his freedom.
According to those involved in the negotiations, communication with him stopped a few days after he was taken hostage.
The kidnappers later informed the family that he had died while allegedly attempting to escape.
However, relatives and close associates of the deceased believe he was deliberately killed even after the ransom had been paid.
