Three people, including a vice principal and a six-year-old pupil, were killed on Wednesday when armed men invaded a school in Iluke Bunu community in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The attackers reportedly arrived in large numbers on about 40 motorcycles around 10 a.m. and stormed Government Secondary School in what was believed to be an attempted mass abduction of students and nearby residents.
The Kogi State Police Command said a joint security team made up of police officers, military personnel, tactical units, and local vigilantes responded quickly after distress calls were received.
During the exchange of gunfire, the attackers were forced to retreat into nearby bushes. Authorities said there is no confirmed report that any student or resident was successfully taken away during the incident.
The victims were identified as Mr. Ganiyu Anifowose, the vice principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School in Iluke, Mr. Sunday Jacob Alhassan, aged 70, and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.
Security sources also confirmed that one of the attackers was killed during the shootout, while a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment.
The police said a major search operation has begun in surrounding forests, with additional patrols deployed across the area to track the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks in the state. Nigeria
