President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.
The announcement was made on Friday during the President’s Democracy Day address, where he paid tribute to individuals who played key roles in Nigeria’s democratic development.
Tinubu said the decision was taken to honour the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his contributions to the country’s journey towards democratic governance.
According to the President, Yar’Adua’s efforts in promoting national unity and political inclusion earned him a lasting place in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The renamed institution, which had been completed as the Institute of Petroleum Studies, will now serve as a memorial to the former military officer and politician.
The President noted that the Federal Government had approved the revitalisation of the institution alongside the name change as part of efforts to preserve the legacies of prominent figures who contributed to nation-building.
Tinubu also used the occasion to announce national honours for more than 30 individuals recognised for their roles in the June 12 democratic struggle and Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
Among those to receive posthumous honours are Dr. Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi. The President stated that the full list of award recipients would be released in the coming days.
The announcements formed part of activities marking Democracy Day, celebrated annually on June 12 in remembrance of the 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the freest in Nigeria’s history.
