Nigerian sprint star Tobi Amusan claimed gold in the women’s 100m hurdles at the New Taipei Athletics Open in Taiwan on Saturday, June 6, continuing her remarkable start to the season.
The 29-year-old crossed the finish line in 12.72 seconds, setting a new meeting record and shaving 0.08 seconds off the previous mark of 12.80 seconds set by American Olympic silver medallist and former world champion Nia Ali.
Taiwan’s Bo Ya Zhang earned silver with a time of 13.17 seconds, while compatriot Yi Po-an took bronze in 13.37 seconds.
Amusan had already signaled her dominance in Heat 2 of the qualifiers, comfortably outpacing her rivals. In the final, she seized control after the fourth hurdle, leaving Zhang trailing and crossing the line well before the last competitor had cleared the final hurdle—delighting the crowd with her commanding performance.
This victory marks the second meeting record Amusan has set this season, following her earlier triumph in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Rabat Diamond League. The three-time Senior Africa Athletics Championship winner has now claimed three victories in five races this season and has finished on the podium in every event she has contested.
With performances like this, Amusan continues to solidify her status as one of the world’s premier hurdlers, thrilling fans with every stride.
