The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported that six transmission towers along the Apir-Lafia transmission line in Nasarawa State were vandalized, causing significant disruptions to electricity supply in parts of the country.
In a statement on Wednesday, June 3, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the incident occurred during a heavy downpour in the early hours of May 30. The transmission line reportedly tripped around 1:15 a.m., and an attempted trial reclosure of Line II at 2:08 a.m. was unsuccessful.
Subsequent physical inspections revealed extensive damage to towers T125 to T130, confirming that the destruction was the result of deliberate vandalism.
“Both Apir-Lafia 330kV transmission lines I and II remain out of service pending the reconstruction of the affected towers,” Mbah stated. She added that TCN engineers are on-site assessing the damage and determining the materials needed for repairs.
To mitigate the impact of the outage, the Lafia 330kV Transmission Station is temporarily being supplied via the Lafia–Jos transmission line. This arrangement aims to maintain electricity supply for customers under the coverage of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company and Jos Electricity Distribution Company.
Mbah condemned the recurring vandalism of electricity infrastructure, warning that such acts threaten national grid stability and undermine investments in the power sector. She urged residents and host communities to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities around transmission facilities. “Collective action is essential to protect national grid assets and ensure reliable power supply,” she said.
