Meta has announced a major update to WhatsApp that will allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of their phone numbers, marking one of the platform's most significant privacy upgrades in recent years.
The feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months and is aimed at giving users greater control over their privacy by preventing their phone numbers from being automatically visible in group chats or when interacting with new contacts.
In a statement announcing the update, WhatsApp said the new system is "designed to protect the privacy of your phone number."
Under the upcoming feature, users will be able to choose a unique username that others can use to contact them. Rather than searching for or adding someone through their phone number, users will need to know the person's exact username.
Meta explained that the platform will not include a public directory or username suggestions.
“There’s no directory to browse and no suggestions, so people need to know your exact username to contact you,” the company said.
With WhatsApp serving more than three billion users worldwide, Meta acknowledged that not everyone will be able to secure their preferred username due to availability.
The company said the rollout will take place in phases, with users receiving notifications once username registration becomes available in their region.
Meta also revealed that creators, businesses, and organisations will have the option of reserving usernames that match their existing identities on Facebook and Instagram, making it easier for users to recognise and connect with verified brands across its platforms.
The introduction of usernames is expected to enhance user privacy while simplifying the process of connecting with people and businesses without the need to exchange personal phone numbers.
