16-Year-Old Nigerian Boy Dies After Getting Into UK Lake.

A 16-year-old Nigerian teenager has died after getting into difficulty while swimming at a lake in Lincoln, United Kingdom.

Lincolnshire Police identified the victim as Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, popularly known as Tomiwa. He was rescued from Swanholme Lakes on July 9, 2026, but later died in hospital despite efforts to save his life.

According to a statement released by Lincolnshire Police on Friday, July 17, officers received a call at approximately 5:48 p.m. reporting concerns for the safety of a person at the popular lake.

Emergency responders, including Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and the East Midlands Ambulance Service, attended the scene and rescued the teenager from the water. Although Tomiwa initially showed signs of responding to treatment, he sadly passed away at 8:50 p.m. with his parents by his side.

Police said a file will be submitted to the coroner, who will investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning.

In a heartfelt tribute released through the police, Tomiwa's parents, Abiodun and Tope Micheal, described their son as a "vibrant, energetic and unforgettable young man whose presence illuminated every space he entered."

"His laughter, warmth and joyful spirit touched countless lives," they said.

Tomiwa, the eldest of four brothers, was remembered as a loving protector and a constant source of encouragement to his siblings.

"His younger brothers adored him, and he cared for them with tenderness, always making them smile and supporting them in every way," his parents added.

The family also described him as a sociable and compassionate young man who made friends wherever he went. Tomiwa played football for Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC and was known for always seeking the good in others.

"He consistently sought the good of others and uplifted those around him," the statement read.

Beyond football, Tomiwa was an active member of his church's youth ministry, where he was admired for his faith, kindness and dedication.

Paying tribute to their son, his parents said: "Tomiwa leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, discipline, joy and compassion. Though his life was short, it was profoundly impactful.

"He leaves a lasting example for his brothers, comfort for his parents and cherished memories for everyone who knew him.

"Tomiwa will forever remain in our hearts."

Tomiwa is the second teenager to lose his life at Swanholme Lakes this summer. On May 24, 15-year-old Declan Sawyer also died after getting into difficulty in the water at the nature reserve.
