'APC Government Is Grossly Corrupt' — Peter Obi Calls For Tinubu's Resignation Over IMF Report

Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has renewed his call for President Bola Tinubu to resign from office, citing a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) report which, according to him, raises serious concerns about transparency in the Federal Government's finances.

In a statement released on Sunday, Obi reacted to the IMF report, which he claimed indicated that about ₦8.83 trillion in expenditure undertaken in 2025 was not reflected in the national budget.

According to Obi, the reported expenditure did not receive legislative approval or fall under normal administrative oversight, describing the development as "horrible" and alleging that it reflects a pattern of grand corruption within the current administration.

"The recent report from the IMF consultation further raises concerns about the scale of grand corruption under the Tinubu government," Obi said.

"The IMF now reveals that about ₦8.83 trillion in expenditure undertaken in 2025 is not reflected in the budget. This expenditure is not budgeted and is therefore not under legislative oversight or administrative scrutiny. This is horrible."

The former Anambra State governor argued that the amount represents about two per cent of Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and exceeds the combined 2025 budgetary allocations for the education and health sectors.

According to him, if properly managed, the funds could have significantly improved public healthcare, education, infrastructure and job creation.

"If such an amount is properly used and accounted for, it could transform Nigeria's public health and education sectors. It could create hundreds of cottage industries that can provide jobs for thousands of graduates and build a solid foundation for economic development. But we cannot account for it," he said.

Obi further alleged that the issue reflects a broader trend of financial mismanagement under the current administration.

"This is not an isolated incident. This is a pattern of grand corruption that has become part of this administration," he stated.

He warned that the alleged disregard for public finance procedures poses a threat to national stability and deepens poverty across the country.

"The capture of the Nigerian state and the plunder of its resources are actions that undermine the basis of state stability and deepen poverty and state failure," he added.

Obi described the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government as "grossly corrupt, incompetent, and insensitive," insisting that the latest revelations reinforce his earlier call for President Tinubu to step down.

"A few days ago, I called on President Tinubu to resign from office for incompetence, lack of capacity, lack of compassion, and failure to improve on his campaign promises," he said.

"But with the daily revelations of pervasive corruption in this administration and its total lack of commitment to the welfare and security of Nigerian citizens, the only reasonable action is for President Tinubu to resign from office."

He also urged Nigerians to demand greater accountability from the government while acting within the provisions of the law.
