The management of Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State, has expelled two students following allegations of involvement in same-sex practice.
The university announced the decision in a statement released on Friday by its Information and Public Relations Unit, saying the action was approved during the 31st Regular Meeting of the Senate after reviewing recommendations from the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.
The institution said the punishment was based on provisions contained in its Students’ Handbook (Second Edition, as amended in 2025).
The affected students were named as Onumoko Hamza from the Department of Biology Education and Abdulazeez Eneji from the Department of Mining Engineering.
The university, however, did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged violation.
Meanwhile, four other students received a one-year suspension for taking part in a physical confrontation on campus.
Those suspended were Favour Akowe of the Microbiology Department, Simbiat Babamuharuna of the Biology Department, as well as Zainab Omayoza and Sukura Bukola, both from the Biochemistry Department.
CUSTECH said it remained committed to enforcing discipline among students and would continue to apply sanctions against anyone found to have breached the institution’s regulations.
Same-sex relationships remain prohibited under Nigerian law through the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, which was signed in 2014 under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The law provides penalties for persons convicted of same-sex relationships and related offences.
The university’s action comes amid ongoing debates around the enforcement of disciplinary rules in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
