The Edo State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled an alleged criminal syndicate involving serving and dismissed police officers, commercial bus drivers, and civilian collaborators accused of kidnapping and extorting unsuspecting members of the public.
The Command's spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed the development while briefing journalists in Benin City on Thursday, July 30, 2026. She explained that the breakthrough followed months of intelligence-led investigations launched after numerous complaints from residents.
According to Ikoedem, the suspects allegedly operated around the Teboga area off Aduwawa, where they posed as legitimate police officers conducting routine operations. Victims were reportedly forced into commercial buses, driven around different parts of the city, and compelled to withdraw money through Point-of-Sale (POS) operators before being released.
She revealed that operatives of the State Intelligence Department arrested members of the syndicate on April 13, 2026, effectively ending the group's alleged activities.
Investigations further showed that the network allegedly consisted of serving police officers, dismissed personnel, commercial bus drivers, and civilian accomplices working together to carry out the crimes.
According to the police, more than 11 victims have identified members of the syndicate and provided detailed accounts of their ordeals. Authorities added that investigations are ongoing as more victims continue to come forward.
As part of disciplinary actions, Inspector Ehubariemen Wisdom, attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, was reduced in rank to Sergeant after being found guilty of misconduct.
The Command also announced the dismissal of five police corporals—Mordi Philip, Destiny Emmanuel, Uwatse Emmanuel, Okon Elvis, and Samuel David Obeten—who are expected to face prosecution over their alleged involvement in the criminal activities.
In addition, Inspector Enahoro Nicholas, attached to Police Mobile Force Squadron 60, has been declared a deserter and remains at large. Police said efforts are underway to apprehend him.
Reaffirming the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, the Edo State Police Command emphasized that any officer found abusing the privileges of the uniform would face investigation and prosecution without exception.
The Command also warned Point-of-Sale operators and members of the public against aiding criminal activities, stressing that anyone found facilitating extortion, fraudulent financial transactions, or laundering proceeds of crime would be prosecuted.
Commending victims who reported the incidents, the police described their cooperation as crucial to exposing and dismantling the alleged syndicate. Residents with relevant information were encouraged to assist ongoing investigations.
The Edo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and restoring public confidence, insisting that there will be no tolerance for misconduct or impunity within the Nigeria Police Force.
