The Federal Government has suspended the planned rehabilitation of a section of the Kara Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway indefinitely.
The Federal Ministry of Works announced the suspension on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, stopping the repair work that was scheduled to begin the same day and continue for two weeks.
The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Engr. R. Adeleye, said the decision was made following directives from higher authorities due to some important reasons. He added that a new date for the commencement of the project would be announced later.
The planned rehabilitation involved repairs to the expansion joints of the Kara Bridge, with the aim of improving the condition and safety of the structure.
Before the suspension, the Lagos State Government had issued a traffic advisory to inform motorists about the expected changes during the repair period.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, had explained that the four-lane road would have been reduced to two lanes along a 1.5-kilometre section to allow engineers to carry out the work safely.
He advised motorists to expect some delays around the Kara area and urged road users to follow instructions from traffic officials while the rehabilitation lasted.
The commissioner had also warned that moderate traffic could occur around Fatgbems Turn as some motorists might make U-turns or take alternative routes to avoid congestion.
However, traffic moving towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn area was expected to experience little disruption.
The Ministry of Works has not provided a new date for when the Kara Bridge rehabilitation will begin.
