The incident occurred along Polytechnic Road in Bori on Sunday evening, July 26, 2026.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on Kine before fleeing into nearby bushes.
An eyewitness told PUNCH that the shooting caused panic in the area as residents and passers-by reportedly ran for safety after hearing gunshots. The victim’s lifeless body was later discovered at the scene.
The incident also disrupted social and commercial activities in the area, with some business owners hurriedly closing their shops.
Bori is home to the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, named after the late playwright and environmental activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, with students of the institution forming a significant part of the local population.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, said police officers arrived at the scene after the assailants had fled.
“Activities have resumed, unlike last night, but people, especially students, are still afraid over the killing, which many said was carried out by cultists,” the source said.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr Thomas Bariere, condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Director of Press and Public Communications in Khana LGA, Barry Neemana, Bariere expressed concern over the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
“This is a heartbreaking and senseless act of violence. Such criminality has no place in a peaceful and law-abiding society,” the statement read.
The council chairman noted that the killing occurred barely weeks after the murder of Clement Deegbara J. of Kpong Community, saying the repeated attacks suggested the activities of armed criminal gangs seeking to undermine peace and security in the local government area.
Bariere urged security agencies to intensify operations across Khana LGA and ensure that those responsible for the killings were arrested and brought to justice.
He also called for a comprehensive investigation into Kine’s murder and urged law enforcement authorities to apprehend everyone connected to the crime and prosecute them according to the law.
While sympathising with Kine’s family, the council chairman reiterated his administration’s commitment to pursuing justice and taking all lawful measures necessary to protect the lives and property of residents in Khana.
