Former Nigerian High Commissioner To UK, Abubakar Alhaji, Dies At 82.

 

Former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, has died.

The elder statesman reportedly passed away on Thursday morning, July 30, 2026, at a hospital in Abuja, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

Alhaji served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and held several prominent positions during his public service career.

He served as Minister of State for Budget and Planning in 1988 and later became Minister of Finance from 1990 to 1991 during the administration of former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida.

He also served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

Beyond his political and diplomatic career, Alhaji held the traditional title of Sardaunan Sokoto. He was turbaned in 1990, succeeding the late Premier of Northern Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello.

His death marks the loss of a prominent Nigerian diplomat, administrator and elder statesman.
