The Ondo State Police Command has arrested four officers, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), following the circulation of a viral video showing them making unprofessional and ethnically insensitive remarks to a member of the public.
The incident reportedly occurred during a stop-and-search operation along the Lagos–Benin Expressway, where one of the officers was captured threatening to detain a motorist if he was of Igbo origin. The footage quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread public criticism.
Speaking to journalists in Akure on Friday, 24 July, the Command's spokesperson, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, identified the officers as AP/No. 207454 ASP Elomore Sodayo, AP/No. 332012 Inspector Adefila Adewale, AP/No. 332449 Inspector Olorunfemi Opeyemi and AP/No. 332369 Inspector Odusola Peter.
Abayomi said the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, had ordered a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of responsibility of each officer involved.
He emphasised that the Nigeria Police Force does not tolerate misconduct, incivility or any behaviour capable of undermining public confidence, promoting ethnic division or bringing the Force into disrepute.
According to the spokesperson, police officers are expected to conduct themselves professionally at all times, respect the dignity of every citizen and carry out their duties in strict compliance with the Force's Code of Conduct and Standard Operating Procedures.
He assured the public that the investigation would be carried out with fairness, transparency and accountability.
Abayomi added that any officer found to have breached the ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force would face appropriate disciplinary action in line with existing laws and established procedures.
