Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has revealed that he has not returned to his hometown since taking over as the head of Nigeria's electoral body because of the heavy responsibilities attached to his position.
He also warned that the spread of false information online is becoming a growing challenge to credible elections in the country.
The INEC chairman made this known on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from the Okun Development Association (ODA), led by its President-General, Ambassador Akenson Rotimi, during a courtesy visit to the commission's headquarters in Abuja.
According to INEC, Amupitan explained that the demands of his office also delayed the meeting with the delegation.
He described his appointment as a national assignment that requires dedication, fairness and integrity in overseeing Nigeria's electoral process.
He expressed appreciation to the Okun community for standing by him through prayers and encouragement since his appointment, saying their support has continued to give him strength while carrying out his duties.
Amupitan also spoke about the growing influence of misinformation and disinformation, saying false information circulating on digital platforms poses a serious challenge to free and credible elections. He added that INEC would continue to carry out its constitutional responsibilities professionally while following the law.
Earlier, Ambassador Rotimi congratulated Amupitan on his appointment as INEC chairman, describing it as recognition of his competence, integrity and years of public service.
He said the appointment had made the Okun people proud, adding that the community has produced many respected individuals who have excelled in different fields.
Rotimi also assured the INEC chairman of the continued prayers and support of the Okun people as he leads the commission in its efforts to strengthen Nigeria's democratic process.
