The UK Maritime Trade Operations also confirmed that several oil tankers had been targeted in the latest incidents, raising concerns over renewed disruption in one of the world’s most important energy routes.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) described its military response as retaliation for what it called a breach of a ceasefire agreement by Washington.
In a statement, CENTCOM said Iran’s actions represented “unwarranted” and “dangerous” aggression, describing the attacks as a violation of the ceasefire.
New Escalation After Ceasefire Dispute
The latest confrontation followed Washington’s announcement that it would restore sanctions on Iran over attacks on commercial vessels in the region.
Tensions between the two countries have intensified since the United States and Iran accused each other of violating the terms of a ceasefire agreement reached in late June.
Shortly after US President Donald Trump signed a peace agreement with Iran, CENTCOM announced strikes on multiple targets inside the country, saying Tehran had been given an opportunity to comply with the ceasefire but failed to do so.
The US military said Iran’s forces had launched a one-way drone attack on the Panama-flagged tanker MT Kiku, prompting the latest response.
President Trump had previously warned that “the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist” if it continued actions he described as violations of the peace agreement.
Iran, however, accused Washington of breaking the ceasefire by allowing continued Israeli strikes in Lebanon, claiming the attacks breached conditions of the agreement.
Strait of Hormuz Tensions Rise
On 20 June, Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz had been “closed” again, accusing the United States of violating the ceasefire arrangement.
Tehran said vessels would need authorisation to pass through the strategic waterway and suggested that ships using the route could face charges.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global shipping route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supplies passes, making any disruption a major concern for international markets and energy security.
It remains unclear whether the reported restrictions on shipping contributed directly to the latest attacks on vessels in the region.
