In an official letter to President Bola Tinubu dated July 6, 2026, US President Donald Trump praised the Nigerian leader's efforts, expressing support for closer collaboration between both countries.
“Thank you for your thoughtful letter. Your kind words mean a great deal to me, and I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people,” Trump wrote.
The US president also highlighted concerns over growing insecurity in the region and commended Tinubu's efforts to tackle violence affecting communities across Nigeria.
“I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities, and it is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” Trump said.
He added that the relationship between the two countries had become increasingly important amid the spread of conflicts across West Africa and other parts of the world.
Trump said the cooperation was supported by what he described as the historic US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap, which provides a framework for joint efforts to combat terrorism.
“We both share a mutual goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms, and our historic US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap has established a robust framework to accomplish this feat,” he stated.
According to Trump, the United States has deployed Special Operations Forces to support the Nigerian Armed Forces with training, equipment and intelligence aimed at strengthening the country's ability to protect its territory and citizens.
He said the US would continue discussions with the Nigerian government throughout his presidency as both countries work to strengthen their security partnership.
The latest cooperation builds on agreements reached late last year to establish a Joint Working Group, co-chaired by the National Security Advisers of both countries.
The partnership focuses on intelligence sharing, advanced military training and tactical coordination. It has also reportedly supported joint counter-terrorism operations, including a May 16 strike on ISIS-linked positions in the Lake Chad Basin, which allegedly killed senior commander Abubakar Al-Minoki and several of his lieutenants.
The renewed security partnership comes as Nigeria continues to confront terrorism and insurgency in the North-East, with the government seeking greater international cooperation to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
