The Kano State Hisbah Board has banned the downloading and distribution of movies through mobile phones across all 44 local government areas of the state.
The board said the decision was taken to protect public morality, uphold Islamic principles and prevent the spread of content considered harmful to society.
The directive was announced on Thursday in a WhatsApp message issued by the Deputy Commander General of the board, Dr. Mujahid Aminuddeen.
According to the board, the action followed complaints that some people involved in the business were sharing pornographic movies and other videos regarded as offensive to the religious beliefs and cultural traditions of Kano State.
The board stated that the ban covers all parts of the state and that enforcement has already begun. Hisbah officials have been assigned to carry out patrols and monitor compliance with the new order.
It warned that anyone caught downloading or distributing movies through mobile phones in violation of the directive would face legal action under the laws of Kano State.
The board also advised those whose businesses are affected by the ban to explore other lawful sources of income.
It explained that the measure is intended to reduce young people's exposure to indecent materials and encourage moral conduct within the state.
According to the Hisbah Board, the increasing rate of moral decline among young people has been linked to the consumption of inappropriate films and videos.
It believes limiting access to such materials will help address the problem.
The Kano State Hisbah Board is responsible for enforcing Sharia-related regulations in the state.
Over the years, it has introduced different measures aimed at promoting Islamic values and restricting activities and content considered to be against the state's religious and cultural standards.
