Kwankwaso Urges North, South-East To Rebuild Political Alliance Ahead Of 2027.

The presidential running mate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has called for renewed political cooperation between Northern Nigeria and the South-East, saying both regions have a long history of working together for national development.

Speaking during an interview with BBC Igbo, Kwankwaso said Northern leaders had resolved to move beyond past divisions and strengthen ties with the South-East in the interest of national unity.

He recalled that during the First Republic, the Northern People's Congress (NPC) formed a political alliance with the National Council of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC), led by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, while similar cooperation continued during the Second Republic.

According to him, the late Vice President Alex Ekwueme enjoyed strong support from Northern political leaders, describing him as a trusted ally throughout his political career.

Kwankwaso also referenced the return of the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, to active politics after the civil war, noting that Northern leaders welcomed him back despite the country's painful history.

He said the gesture reflected a spirit of reconciliation that should continue to guide Nigeria's politics.

"We have to forgive ourselves and work together as one family. The South-East has been our ally and friend over the years," Kwankwaso said.

He stressed that building stronger ties with the South-East does not amount to hostility towards any other region, including the South-West, insisting that Nigeria's diversity should be a source of strength rather than division.

Kwankwaso further urged politicians to abandon campaigns built around religious or regional sentiments, arguing that the country's future depends on inclusive leadership and national cohesion.
